If you know me, you know how much I love a Disney on property resort. And I genuinely do love all three options available at Disneyland Resort: the Grand Californian Hotel and Spa, the Disneyland Hotel, and Pixar Place Hotel. But if you are looking to save a meaningful amount of money without sacrificing your experience, venturing just down the street is absolutely worth considering. Why Disneyland Is Different From Walt Disney World
This is the key thing to understand before you make your hotel decision. Disneyland has a much smaller footprint than Walt Disney World and it is set right in the middle of a city. That means non-Disney hotels can be located within walking distance of the front gate, which completely changes the off property conversation compared to what most people are used to at Disney World.
At Walt Disney World, staying off property usually means relying on a rental car or rideshare to get to and from the parks every single day. At Disneyland, a well-chosen off property hotel can put you just as close to the entrance as some of the on property options, sometimes even closer!
Where I Recommend Staying: Harbor Boulevard
I personally like to recommend and stay at the hotels along Harbor Boulevard in Anaheim. I recently stayed at The Anaheim Hotel for the second time and it was a 10 minute walk from my hotel room door to the security checkpoint. And honestly, the only reason it took 10 minutes was that I had to wait to cross the street! The walk itself is short, well-lit, and very manageable. It really is not that much farther than walking from the Disneyland Hotel or Pixar Place Hotel either.
The hotels along Harbor Boulevard are so close to the parks that from certain rooms you can see the parks, catch the nightly fireworks, and watch the monorail zip by if your room faces west. That is how close we are talking!
Other Great Off Property Hotel Options Near Disneyland
Beyond The Anaheim Hotel, there are several other excellent options along and near Harbor Boulevard that I think are worth knowing about:
Courtyard Anaheim Theme Park Entrance: This is a fantastic family friendly option that is just about a five minute walk to the main gate. The hotel features bunk beds in every room and a 20,000 square foot outdoor water playground called Surfside Waterpark, making it a great pick for families with younger kids.
Grand Legacy at the Park: Located directly across the street from Disney California Adventure, this hotel is about a five to ten minute walk to the main gate. It features a rooftop lounge called The FIFTH that is a wonderful spot to watch the nightly fireworks, along with a pool area with a splash zone and whirlpool spa.
Howard Johnson Anaheim Hotel and Water Playground: Another solid option that is about an eight minute walk to the parks. The Howard Johnson features an impressive outdoor water play area called Castaway Cove with slides, a pirate ship with water cannons, a toddler wading pool, and a hot tub where parents can relax while watching the kids play.
Hyatt House Anaheim: If your family needs more space and loves a complimentary breakfast, this is a great pick. Hyatt House Anaheim offers apartment-style suites with full kitchens and separate sitting areas, plus a complimentary buffet breakfast every morning. It is about a ten minute walk to the main gate.
Westin Anaheim Resort: If you want a more upscale off property experience, the Westin is worth a look. Guests of the Westin enter through the Downtown Disney security checkpoint rather than the Harbor Boulevard entrance, which means shorter lines historically and easy access to the back entrance of Disney California Adventure.
There are also a few hotels that offer included breakfast within walking distance, which is something worth looking into if that matters to your family. My hotel on my most recent trip did not include breakfast, but it is definitely an option out there!
Is It Safe to Walk Back to Your Hotel After the Parks Close?
This is probably the most common question I get when I recommend off property hotels near Disneyland, so I want to address it honestly. I was alone on my last trip and did not feel uncomfortable at all walking back after park close. Yes, it is a city and you see normal city things along the way, but there are also a lot of other park guests walking the same route and I was never truly alone on the sidewalk. The entire walk is well lit, I could see my hotel from the rideshare drop off area near the park entrance, and I would have felt comfortable walking to the CVS down the street on my own. I have actually done exactly that on previous trips with others!
The bottom line is that this is a normal city street with a lot of tourist foot traffic, especially right after park close. Use the same common sense you would in any city setting and you will be completely fine.
What About the "Good Neighbor Hotels" Program?
You may have heard the term Good Neighbor Hotels when researching Disneyland area accommodations. Good Neighbor Hotels are Disney-approved quality hotels near Disneyland Resort where many offer free shuttles to the park, making them a convenient and reliable off property option. Many of the hotels along Harbor Boulevard fall into this category, so you are not just choosing any random hotel when you stay in this area. These are vetted properties that Disney itself has approved for guests.
One Thing to Keep in Mind: Hotel Pricing Can Vary a Lot
One important tip I want to share is that hotel pricing in Anaheim can fluctuate significantly depending on what is happening at the nearby Anaheim Convention Center. When a major event is being held at the convention center, there simply are not enough hotel rooms within walking distance of Disneyland to meet demand, and prices can skyrocket. Hotels that normally run around $150 per night can jump to $400 per night during a large convention. Always check the Anaheim Convention Center calendar when you are planning your trip so you are not caught off guard by unusually high rates!
The Only Downside Worth Mentioning
In my opinion, there really are not any significant downsides to staying off property at Disneyland as long as you choose a hotel within walking distance. The key phrase there is within walking distance. Some hotels in the Anaheim area are farther away and that means relying on hotel shuttles or a rideshare to get to and from the parks each day, which I do not think is particularly convenient for most families. Stick to the hotels on or just off Harbor Boulevard and you will be in great shape.
Off Property vs. On Property at Disneyland: A Quick Comparison
Here is a simple breakdown to help you decide which option is right for your family:
On Property (Grand Californian, Disneyland Hotel, Pixar Place Hotel) Best for: Families who want maximum immersion in the Disney experience, early entry perks, and the ability to walk directly into the parks through private entrances. The Grand Californian even has its own entrance directly into Disney California Adventure. Worth every penny if the budget allows!
Off Property on Harbor Boulevard Best for: Families who want to save money without giving up walkability. You will still be just minutes from the front gate, and many hotels offer great amenities like water parks and complimentary breakfast that the on property hotels do not always have at the same price point.
My Personal Recommendation
If budget is a consideration at all, I have no hesitation recommending the off property hotels along Harbor Boulevard. The walkability factor is what makes Disneyland unique compared to other theme park destinations. You truly do not have to choose between saving money and having a convenient, enjoyable stay. The two can absolutely go hand in hand here.
